All it takes is one hit – it doesn’t even have to be that hard – to damage your smile.
If you lead an active lifestyle, you already know that accidents happen. Not even professional athletes are immune to injury!
One third of all dental injuries are sports related, according to the American Dental Association. But you can protect yourself! Each year, mouthguards prevent more than 200,000 oral injuries. That’s why they are a must, along with the protective gear already in your closet.
What are some of the high-risk activities?
Sports: Basketball, soccer, baseball, lacrosse, rugby, wrestling, martial arts, boxing, gymnastics, hockey, water polo, squash.
Others: Acrobatics, skydiving, bicycling, equestrian events, skiing, skateboarding, weightlifting.

What are the common injuries?

  • Broken teeth
  • Cut lips
  • Fractured jaw and roots
  • Concussion

What are your options?

Just like there are different brands of brushes, there are a few mouthguards to choose from. Here they are for your review!
    • Boil & Bite – Over-the-counter-guards, known as “boil & bite,” are made of a material that softens when heated and hardens after cooling. They can be shaped by the tongue and fingers, and offer some degree of protection, but not nearly as much as a custom-fitted mouthguard, professionally made in our office.
    • Stock-Fitted –These ready-made mouth protectors are available at sports stores. The downside is you may experience breathing difficulties because they cannot be adjusted. Again, not nearly the quality or effectiveness of what we can make for you.
    • Custom – Your final – and best – option is a custom-fitted mouthguard. At Batavia Family Dental, we take a dental impression to ensure it fits your smile like a glove. This is the right choice if you desire ultimate comfort and protection. Mouthguards are typically worn over the upper teeth, but if you wear a fixed dental appliance (braces, prosthetics, etc.) we can make a mouthguard for your lower teeth, too!

    How can we help?

Your smile is in good hands with my team and I. We will sit down with you to discuss your options and make the right decision – for you!
One thing is for sure: a mouthguard shouldn’t be overlooked when you engage in physical activity. It’s a fairly inexpensive investment compared to what you might need to spend on repair bills if trauma occurs.
So don’t delay! Let us make sure you’re properly equipped for the field, the court, or anywhere else your active lifestyle leads you! We look forward to hearing from you.
