Teeth Whitening

Image
As we get older, teeth can change color due to several factors. But our whitening procedure can turn back the hands of time to restore that bright contagious smile everyone will notice!

How do teeth change color?

There are three main causes of discoloration:
  • Extrinsic – This is when the enamel is stained by beverages or foods. Smoking is also to blame.
  • Intrinsic – The inner structure of the tooth (known as the dentin) goes yellow or darkens. There are several causes, such as overexposure to fluoride as a child, trauma that led to internal bleeding, and being born with a rare tooth disorder known as dentinogenesis imperfecta.
  • Age and injuries – Dentin (one of four dental tissues) yellows over time. Enamel gets thinner, which makes the dentin more visible. A chip or other injuries can lead to discolored teeth.

What are the benefits of whitening?

There are three main causes of discoloration:
  • A confident smile.
  • Improved oral health care habits. Often, patients who undergo this procedure step up their cleaning game.
  • You will look – and likely feel – younger!

We can help!

At Batavia Family Dental, we use advanced LED light-activated technology to enhance the action of bleaching materials on teeth. We can get your smile up to eight shades lighter! A major advantage is how quickly it can be done (usually within an hour). However, if you have severe discoloration caused by tetracycline stains, for example, more treatments could be necessary.
Important: It should be noted that only real teeth can be whitened. It won’t work on veneers, caps, crowns, and false teeth. Yellow and brown teeth respond better to treatment than grey ones, which lighten but don’t whiten. When that’s the case, we have other effective solutions to brighten your smile!
